Thanks, although I can't understand then why babel must forbid this, rather than just warning that it could produce unexpected results. The objects being shared between blocks are far too big and complicated too be declared as variables. But your suggestion to use :eval no-export was new to me, and would work very well in this case, and using C-c C-v C-b and C-c C-c as necessary to run the code.
