The first function in my ~/.emacs.d/init.el is one I got from here:

  "Save buffers, Quit, and Shutdown (kill) server"
  (interactive)
  (save-some-buffers)
  (kill-emacs))

After that, I can emacsclient -t -e '(server-shutdown)'
