I learned org mode following the compact official instruction

** Lord of the Rings
My favorite scenes are (in this order)
1. The attack of the
2. Eowyn's fight with the witch king

the command M-RET works which Insert new item at current level. With a prefix argument, force a new heading (see Section 2.5 [Structure editing], page 3).

but M-S-RET does not work as excepted to insert a checkbox, otherwise perform identically as M-RET

I understand M-S-RET as Meta + Shift + Return

How could I solve the problem?

  • What do you get when you type F1 k M-S-RET? – DoMiNeLa10 Dec 28 '18 at 15:13

Where is the cursor when you press M-S RET? It will only insert a checkbox if you call it when your cursor (point) is on a line with a list item (i.e., 1. The attack of the). It won't insert a checkbox if the cursor is on a headline (ie., ** Lord of the Rings) or a normal text line (My favorite ...). – Tyler Dec 28 '18 at 17:27
  • I got M-RET runs the command org-meta-return (found in org-mode-map), , it indicate Shift key is not stroked. @DoMiNeLa10 – user10726006 Dec 29 '18 at 5:54
