As described in question title.

Closest solution that I can find is to use ido-find-file-other-window orido-switch-buffer-other-windew, but these create a horizontal split by default, and if a vertical split is what I need, I have to create that split separately prior to calling either commands.

I have also tried add <C-u> before the above commands, but that doesn't seem to change the behavior.
