Is there an existing feature which is capable of showing the functions and classes within each script in the neotree buffer, in a similar style as to how you can expand the directories' drop down list to show the files in each directory?

It sounds like you want the imenu feature built into the neotree.el library. If we open the neotree.el library and search for the word imenu, we see that there is no built-in imenu support. github.com/jaypei/emacs-neotree/blob/dev/neotree.el However, it could be implemented as a new feature -- it may behoove you to open an issue on Github as a feature request. A popular tree explorer that comes with built-in imenu support is the speedbar.el library that comes with Emacs. I implemented imenu support for a custom build of ztree and it took me a fair amount of time. – lawlist Aug 5 '20 at 18:32
