Running fresh (emacs -q), with the following org-mode items:

* TODO item 1
  DEADLINE: <2021-03-01 Mon> SCHEDULED: <2021-02-27 Sat>
* TODO item 2
  SCHEDULED: <2021-02-28 Sun>
* TODO item 3
  DEADLINE: <2021-03-02 Tue>

With org-agenda-sorting-strategy set to ((agenda deadline-up scheduled-up)...) (omitted other views for clarity) I get the following agenda view for the day:

Tuesday     2 March 2021
  test: Sched. 3x: TODO item 1
  test: Sched. 2x: TODO item 2
  test:        1 d. ago:  TODO item 1
  test:       Deadline:   TODO item 3

and with ((agenda scheduled-up deadline-up)...), I get:

Tuesday     2 March 2021
  test:        1 d. ago:  TODO item 1
  test:       Deadline:   TODO item 3
  test: Sched. 3x: TODO item 1
  test: Sched. 2x: TODO item 2

These examples seem like unspecified deadlines and scheduling dates default to behave as if they are infinitely in the past (changing -up to -down is consistent with this). But doesn't it make more sense for them to behave like infinitely in the future, or is that just me?

In any case, how would you work around this to achieve the latter?
