By default, the entries of the abbrev_defs file are sorted alphabetically, something like below.

Is it possible to force emacs to save the entries by chronological order? That is, the abbreviations appear in the `abbrev_defs' file by the date/time that they have been defined.

(define-abbrev-table 'global-abbrev-table
  '(
    ("something" "something-else" nil :count 0)
    ("this" "that" nil :count 0)
   ))

  • Looks like sort is baked into the write-abbrev-file and the insert-abbrev-table-description functions. I don't see any immediate machinery for users to change that. Check abberv.el. Might make a nice submission to Emacs core; I like the idea. Jan 14 at 16:49
